Curved light beam

The light beam from a laser passes through a container with a sugar solution. The concentration of the solution increases continuously from top to bottom. The gradient of the refractive index causes curvature of the light beam in the direction of higher sugar concentration.

Caution: Experiment with class 3R laser and possible eye damage!
Do not look into the laser beam!
