The Kapitza pendulum is a rigid pendulum in which the pivot point vibrates up and down in a vertical direction. The vibrating suspension allows it to balance stably in an inverted position, i.e. in a position in which the pendulum bob is above the suspension point, i.e. the pendulum is "upside down".
The pendulum shown here is realised as a double pendulum so that various stable positions can be demonstrated.
