Vaporising a steel wire

Experiment no.: 6.2.301
Stahldraht verdampfen
High voltage capacitors with a total capacity of approx. 100 uF are charged to approx. 2 kV. The energy stored in the capacitors can be transmitted via a spark gap into a steel wire. When the spark gap is closed, so much energy is released in this process that the steel wire evaporates --- a spectacular experiment!

Caution: Experiment with possible eye and hearing damage!
Personal protective equipment necessary!
